و" القت " محصول علفي يزرع على نطاق واسع في مختلف ولايات السلطنة لما له من قيمة غذائية عالية ولاحتوائه على بروتين عالٍ قادر على إنتاج الطاقة لو ما قورن بغيره من المحاصيل العلفية الأخرى ومصدرًا للفيتامينات الرئيسية لغناها بالمحتويات المعدنية.
ويزرع البرسيم "القت" في موسمين زراعيين الأول خلال شهري أكتوبر ونوفمبر من كل عام وفي شهر فبراير ومارس كموسم ثانٍ، ويعتبر الموسم الأول الأكثر ملاءمة ونجاحًا نظرًا لاعتدال درجات الحرارة في حين أن الموسم الثاني ترافقه ارتفاع درجات الحرارة عالية
وهو يعتبر الغذاء الأفضل للحيوانات مما يحسن جودة لحومها وحليبها ويعدل الحالة الصحية والجسمانية للماشية بشكل عام ".
" التربة الطينية الرملية هي أفضل أنواع التربة لزراعة القت رغم إمكانية نموه وتطوره في العديد من أنواع التربة إذا توفرت فيها الهشاشة والقدرة العالية على الاحتفاظ بكميات جيدة من المياه " ويعتبر الصرف الجيد لمياه الري طلبًا رئيسيًا لزراعته إضافة الى المحتوى الجيد من العناصر الغذائية المغذية له عند بداية زراعته وخلال فترات نموه المختلفة.
ويتم حصاد البرسيم في العام الواحد بين 10 و12 مرة وتستغرق مدته حوالي 25 يومًا لكل حصاد تسمى محليًا (جزه) ويتم حصاده يدويًا.
ويحتاج كل فدان زراعي من 5 الى 7 كيلوجرامات من بذور البرسيم وهي تزرع على عمق لا يزيد عن ال10سنتمترات وتسقى بواسطة الري بالتنقيط أو الرشاشات
